Since its inception in 1990, our organization has expanded outside of the State of New York and has chartered chapters in the states of New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Georgia, Florida, Arkansas, Illinois, Michigan, Texas and California. We dedicate ourselves to service, academic excellence and professional development. This diverse group of women came together with the goal of creating an organization that would help their communities, unite women and promote scholarship. On DecemSigma Iota Fraternity merged with Phi Lambda Alpha fraternity to form Phi Iota Alpha. ![]() NICKNAME AND USE The sorority nickname is Lovely Latin Lady/Lovely Latin Ladies, which was adopted after the sorority was established. Thus both organizations complemented each other and began to work towards the creation of the fraternity now known as Phi Iota Alpha. Sigma Iota Fraternity was in search of revitalizing some of its defunct chapters. I found my calling to be a leader in social service through Phi Sigma Pi. Meanwhile, another fraternity Phi Lambda Alpha, which had been recently founded in 1919 at the University of California, Berkeley was seeking to expand throughout the United States. By 1928, Sigma Iota had lost many of its chapters and therefore sought to stabilize its operations by consolidating its chapters in the United States with a more stationary and well-rooted organization. ![]() On DecemSigma Iota Fraternity merged with Phi Lambda Alpha Fraternity to form Phi Iota Alpha. As a result of this, Sigma Iota became the first international Latin American–based fraternity.
